About us Graham & David M

So what brings you here then? You want to take up running, maybe you are already a runner with no affiliation, or you're just being nosey? No problem. Let's give you some details about ARR and what to expect.

Accrington Road Runners has been established for over 20 years and currently has membership in excess of 100 of all abilities. The club meets each Tuesday throughout the year at Wilson's Playing Fields in Clayton-le-Moors near Accrington, Lancashire where changing and shower facilities are available. Training runs begin at 6.30pm and are split into mixed abilities so no-one is left struggling or finds themselves out of their depth.

If it's your first venture into running it is a good idea to get yourself into some sort of shape before coming down so that you can run for about 60 minutes at a modest pace. Don't forget though, no one gets left behind. Winter runs are obviously confined to pounding the streets around Hynburn and routes are varied each time to maintain interest.Summer runs are usually off the road. It could be Whalley Nab or a canal run, etc. the choice is endless.

Race relays Jo and Mark

ARR also take part in club events such as the Rossendale Relay and the Manchester to Blackpool relay and we also have our own race competitions throughout the year (see 'Points Races' in our club news section) Through the summer months we have several 'social runs' at various locations in Hyndburn/Ribble valley or other outlying areas. Last year these runs were very popular with 40-50 runners at some.

What to wear

Along with the correct running gear you'll also need a pretty thick skin...leg pulling is not uncommon amongst runners. Mind you, you probably already have a sense of humour to even contemplate all this anyway!

Dave Graham is currently our contact for people who would like to give running a go. If you have logged on to our website for some inspiration and would like to know how to start runnng, for whatever reason, either to just 'get fit' or train for a marathon, then we at Accrington Road Runners would love to help you achieve your goal.

So, interested? Then why not email us, or just turn up at Wilson's Playing Fields on Tuesday. Membership is just £15.00 per year.....soon recouped by entering races where you will save £2.00 each time.

If you would like to read more information about running, then click here to go to a short article called "10 Steps to start you off running", written by one of our members, Colin Battrick.

A letter from one of our members Graham M

Marathon Training,
Could you please on my behalf say a big THANK YOU to all Accrington Road Runners who have not only helped me complete one marathon but who are now out slogging the streets with me and taking it in turns to help me achieve another marathon. Special thanks to Sue Pickup, Joanne Bramley and Jill McFadden for their support, guidance and most of all friendship, I only hope I can return the favours. I was misguided in the past and joined C-L-M Harriers but the year 2000 became a turning Leg1 - Girls point for me when I joined A.R.R. I have never known a club be so friendly and so supportive, so once again thanks! You have given me lots to look forward to, club runs, Thursday runs with the girls, Sunday long runs, races and social evenings (which we don't have enough of) and of course the 'girlie nights out' which take time to recover from! I am proud to be a member of the club and can't imagine life without you all.

M.Hartley.
