Race the train           Bury              10th June 2018
Points race trail (5/7)

Well what better things to do on one of the hottest days of the year than to go race a steam train for over 10 miles!  14 ARR runners thought they would give it a shot. The train we were racing is called Republic of South Africa, a little extra nugget of totally useless info here,  the train hasnt got long left on the East Lancs line as it is off to a farm Scotland to be used as a tourist attraction!! The race was suppossed to start at 11am, but as it is a Northern Rail service it was late, by 25 minutes!! So eventually, after a rather hot and sweaty delay 500 eager runners finally set off at the train whistle at 11:25.

Josh was on beast mode and was first up the slope out of the car park. The route took us out of Bury centre and onto the Irwell Trail. Its a very pretty, scenic route mainly trail with a few stretches of pavement and a 1km lap of a park thrown in. Lots of support on route. We had a casualty early doors from Rick Grice, he injured his leg so had to drop out, he did hang around on the course to cheer us all on.  My only gripe is the second water station ran out of water by the time us later runners arrived there, a little annoying on a boiling hot day! Thank god for the locals who arrived with hose pipes to refill the water tanks.

Liam, Dave 'Sherpa' Sagar and Pam had taken up the challenge of a double race weekend by doing Weets fell race the day before. At least Dave was more sober on Sunday than he was on the Saturday. Paul Wickham donned his ARR vest after a 2 year hiatus, hes obviously limbering up for Bradford Relays, hoping to keep his club record!!  Josh again produced a stellar run, coming 29th overall.  Maybe its a perfect opportunity to discuss the issue of chip/gun times, it  needs addressing as Joshs chip time was over 5 minutes different from his gun time. If he would have been awarded his chip time he would have been 7th!

Overall 9 of the 14 ARR members beat the train!  Josh, Dave S, Paul, Keith, Michele, Liam, Kaye, Michael and Katherine well done to you all on a tough course with beaming hot sunshine thats a great achievement!!  (Although it was 10 minutes later than scheduled) Another great result from our small team.

Runner                  Chip time

Josh Woodstock    1:15:09       Fantastic time,  smashed it!! Should have queried the gun/chip timings.
Dave Savage         1:26:05       Great run from Dave, very strong. Massive smile to welcome the other ARR back.
Paul Wickham        1:31            A break from choir practice!   I cant find his official result, sorry
Keith Robinson      1:32:22       Strong run from Keith, on a very hot day.
Michele Baker        1:35:23       Solid run from our El Pres!!  She hates trail!
Liam Moden           1:35:34       Tired legs after Weets, still great result from Mr.Omnipresent!
Kaye Callaghan     1:38:03       Excellent race from Kaye, storming back from injury
Michael Whewell    1:41:33      Great run from Michael , the first time ive seen him finish without a smile on his face.
Katherine Gregson 1:44:43      Powered by Taylor Swift! She beat the train! Well done Katherine
Dave  Sagar           1:50:05     If he ever turned up sober bet he would be elite! (well maybe)
Pamela McCullagh 1:53:04     Tired everywhere after Weets, not really my favourite surface.
Peter Hoyle             2:05:19    Great support from The Hoyles as ever, Janet really enjoyed it.
Janet Hoyle             2:07:37
Rick Grice               DNF         Wishing you a speedy recovery Rick

The price was £22 (bit steep),  started from Bury ended in Rawtenstall so local, prizes were a tshirt and medal.

Next trail race is Trawden 7 on July 1st!! See you there

As a club we are going to try to showcase this competition on Saturday 7 th of July . Please try to make that day . If you can't make that date then please make contact with your opponent and re arrange another Saturday to race . The July 7 date is for hynburn parkrun , this is the preferred park run . If you and your opponent wish to run at another park run that is fine . The handicap ratings still apply wherever you wish to compete . If your tie is not taking place on July 7 th please contact Liam moden at liammoden @hotmail.co.uk or text only on 07850604853 . Please try and complete your first round tie by Saturday august 4 th .   This is our first try at this style of competition and the very fact that it is a handicap means in theory everyone has an equal chance of winning . Hopefully , it will be a success. If so , we will make it an annual event . Please try your best to contact your opponent to confirm your tie date . Don't forget to inform Liam moden and your opponent if you are injured and so wish to concede your tie . One last point , don't forget you need to run with a park run bar code . We are using park run results and they are final . Sorry for your handicap mark if you think it is un realistic but I have tried my best to research available park run data         Thanks and enjoy yourselves Liam       PLEASE WEAR CLUB KIT  if poss , especially on July 7 to publicise our club

I'm entering a team to the It's a Knockout at Enfield cricket club again this year. With enough interest it may be possible to have 2 teams this year as a few people missed out last year. This takes place on the August bank holiday Monday (27th) so we should have decent weather. Everyone had a great time last year and it was a fantastic team bonding afternoon so I hope more people can get involved this time.Let me know at club on Tuesday evenings or message me on Facebook if anyone's interested.(message will expire on Tue 28/Aug/2018).

The idea behind the Saturday 7 July as our target day for the competition is to get as many A R R as possible at hynburn to help promote the club . If unable to run that day other Saturdays are alternatives(message will expire on Thu 02/Aug/2018).

Just a reminder to all our runners regarding the rule on club vests.
When competing as a member of Accrington Road Runners in a race or event; it is expected you wear (and display) a club vest.
This is particularly important when representing the club in team events and in our club races.
The club vest helps advertise and promote the club gives us a presence in races.
Club Vests are available from Colette
