On the road - BE SAFE

The road is a dangerous place at the best of times, but when you are focusing on your own speed rather than that of the traffic, you need to be extra vigilant. Make sure you stay safe with these rules of the road:
    Start at Settle
  • Run against traffic Always run on the right-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic. This way, vehicles can see you, and you can see them. The only exception to this rule is on sharp bends. Cross over well before the road curves so you can see what is coming.
  • Give cars right of way At any junction, let the car go first - do not try to beat them across the road.
  • About to spring in to action
  • Be alert of just-parked vehicles Always monitor the movements of traffic around you. If a car has just parked, chances are someone is about to open the door. If in doubt, give parked cars a wide berth.
  • Never assume you have been seen Assumption is the mother of all disasters - unless you assume the worst. With traffic, act cautiously and imagine the worst-case scenario.
  • Double check one-way streets Although traffic is not supposed to go the wrong way up a one-way street, it occassionally does. Always check to your right before crossing a street.
  • We are freezing
  • Wear reflective clothes Wear reflective garments when running at night and ideally during the day as well. Light coloured clothing is also a good idea. You can never be too visible.
