On the road - BE SAFE

The road is a dangerous place at the best of times, but when you are focusing on your own speed rather than that of the traffic, you need to be extra vigilant. Make sure you stay safe with these rules of the road:
    Townley Park Cross Country 2011
  • Run against traffic Always run on the right-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic. This way, vehicles can see you, and you can see them. The only exception to this rule is on sharp bends. Cross over well before the road curves so you can see what is coming.
  • MP3 players/headphones etc. Headphones (or any device that’s plugged in to the ear) are now banned at any race that is held under UK Athletics rules for reasons of health & safety, both yours and other competitors. Any runner seen wearing headphones immediately gets a ‘DNF’ notice next to their name on the results. With safety our paramount importance, the committee have taken the decision to ban any music devices worn in the ears (or just one ear) on club training nights. Any runner who actively flaunts this new rule, will not have their membership renewed at the AGM. The committee sees Accrrington Road Runners as a friendly social club, and we do not make decisions like this lightly. In this instance where safety of or members is at stake, we have taken a decision that we hope makes sense to all club members.
  • Give cars right of way At any junction, let the car go first - do not try to beat them across the road.
  • Townley Park Cross Country 2011
  • Be alert of just-parked vehicles Always monitor the movements of traffic around you. If a car has just parked, chances are someone is about to open the door. If in doubt, give parked cars a wide berth.
  • Never assume you have been seen Assumption is the mother of all disasters - unless you assume the worst. With traffic, act cautiously and imagine the worst-case scenario.
  • Double check one-way streets Although traffic is not supposed to go the wrong way up a one-way street, it occassionally does. Always check to your right before crossing a street.
  • Townley Park Cross Country 2011
  • Wear reflective clothes Wear reflective garments when running at night and ideally during the day as well. Light coloured clothing is also a good idea. You can never be too visible.
